"Intimately caresses the listener's Dark Fantasy Folk soul." Sonic Seducer

"An atmospheric, dense, beautiful blanket of sound with interesting ideas and melodies. A perfect background for playing, reading, painting, wallpapering, having s*x, cleaning windows, dozing off, walking in the forest, playing with the cat... Like good wine and cozy candlelight.” Ruhrgesichter

“Legends of Andor – Original Board Game Soundtrack” is a cooperation between the fantasy folk band ELANE and the game developer and illustrator Michael Menzel. It is the band’s 6th studio album, describing stories and places from the fantastic world of Andor. Sometimes, the songs have a dreamy air, sometimes they feature a mediaeval folkloristic style, sometimes they show off bombastic orchestra arrangements or are spherical and driving. This is an album for both fans of ELANE and of fantasy folk in general which is perfectly suited as a soundtrack for playing board games, pen & paper or LARP roleplaying or even cosplaying – and of course, for many exciting rounds of “Legends of Andor”.

“Legends of Andor – Original Board Game Soundtrack” was released as CD with an artful booklet containing many illustrations as well as the imposing cover image by Michael Menzel.

Background and Trivia:
The world of Andor is counted among the most popular fantasy settings of the German gaming community. As such, “Legends of Andor”, was able to entertain board game enthusiasts young and old from the very beginning and thus was also lauded “Aficionado Game of the Year”.

From the very beginning, even ELANE’s frontwoman Joran has been among the “Andori” (as the continually growing group of fans of the Andor series calls themselves.)
“I was deeply impressed by the game’s dense atmosphere as well as its highly detailed illustrations.”, she recalls. “I really had to tell Micha how much I loved his world and, on a whim, wrote him.”
Micha is Michael Menzel, the inventor and illustrator of Andor. It was one of many fateful encounters out of which, in the course of the following years, something big would develop.
Michael Menzel remembers, “When Joran wrote to me, I had been looking for the fitting music for ‘Journey to the North’, the second part of ‘Legends of Andor’.” Quickly, a spark was ignited between Joran, Micha and the other members of ELANE.

From the idea came a rough sketch, from which, in turn, a concrete concept for a soundtrack was developed. During the past five years, two LP soundtracks with atmospheric background were released. Michael Menzel would lay out out the desired mood and setting, and ELANE allowed themselves to be inspired by his works. They compared notes, adapted some aspects and changed some of the pieces until in the end, all was perfect and a fitting acoustic background for many intense and exciting games had been created. It is 100% inspired by the stories, places and characters from Andor and is composed and produced by ELANE in their typical style, closely accompanied by the game’s author.

The result was two very long, orchestral one-track soundtracks which were received enthusiastically both by the “Andori” and the specialized press.
“The longplay soundtracks tie very much into each other. This is their allure, as well as exactly matching the game”, producer and keyboarder Nico Steckelberg explains. “Even while recording, we noticed that the chapters of the soundtrack might as well be used as stand-alone songs:”
But there was a small challenge, as guitarist and producer Skaldir describes, “In a soundtrack, the voice track, tune and overall production must remain in the background as not to annoy the players. This is a general requirement of the genre as well as the goal of a soundtrack. Furthermore, Micha placed great value on it as well and it turned out to be the right decision.”
But is this enough for an entire ELANE album? Skaldir has a strong opinion on this. “This time, in order to have a stand-alone ELANE album, it was very important for us to create stand-alone musical pieces which are based on the two long sound collages but felt more like songs.”
Nico Steckelberg expands this by saying, “We also added songs that were developed during the creative process and which were not published until now.”
“We are very happy with the results.”, the singer Joran Elane adds. “It was very fulfilling to give this wonderful soundtrack yet another form. In order to achieve this, we have recorded completely new vocal and instrumental tracks. Besides, working with Micha has been a great experience!” Her band colleagues wholeheartedly agree.

“While travelling through Andor, I had many great encounters.”, Michael Menzel looks back. “One of the most fruitful encounters certainly was the one with ELANE. There is a proverb that says, ‘music is the straight path to the soul’, and as Andor is a game with a lot of emotions, the idea of creating a soundtrack was the logical consequence. Nonetheless, I could have never imagined what ELANE would create for Andor. I am fortunate that Andor was extended in this dimension and I am grateful that this was done with such talent and zest.”
The album “Legends of Andor – Original Board Game Soundtrack” is a special album of ELANE because it works without lyrics. However, it is and remains a typical ELANE album which magically fits into the band’s previous oeuvre because whenever fantasy folk meets elegiac heavenly voices, spherical synths and uplifting orchestra sounds, probably ELANE will be behind it.
